Position: Business Development Manager - Rice Category

Location: Woodmead

Salary: R 550 000 - R 700 000 P/A dependent upon experience


Job purpose 


To grow sales volumes and market share of a category across the SA FMCG businesses, towards achievement of the following primary objectives:

  • Volume Budgets 

  • Category share growth

  • Strong customer relationships


Key/Main responsibility areas 

  • Develop and implement a national sales plan to grow market share within a specific category across Modern Trade, Traditional Trade and the HORECA Channels.

  • Develop plans with a strong focus on listings, distribution, promotions and visibility in ensuring market share growth as per the company objectives in conjunction with the Channel Heads. 

  • Accountable for total volume and share growth across the SA business channels.

  • Plan and execute promotional activities as agreed for the category.

  • Monitor and report on market developments and competitor activity. 

  • Collaborate with internal teams and stakeholders, such as: Supply Chain, Global category teams, Planning and Finance to ensure streamlined and speedy deliverables to Customers.

  • Use market insights to develop category plans across all Channels.

  • Track, measure and evaluate sales metrics and trends and provide corrective recourse actions, where necessary.

  • Forecast volumes for bulk and consumer pack on a 1, 3 and 12-month basis.

  • Develop strong Below the Line category plans and ensure effective execution of such plans, in collaboration with Marketing.

  • Diploma in a Commercial field                                                                                                                       



  • 5 years working experience in FMCG Sales,

  • Established strong relationships across the FMCG industry (Modern Trade and Traditional Trade)

  • Experience in Category management and Customer business plans



  • Cross functional knowledge of trade marketing, retail 

  • Market share trends


  • Strong entrepreneurial skills

  • Strong commercial understanding and business acumen

  • Outstanding business communication, interpersonal and leadership skills

  • MS Office

  • Basic financial skills

  • Shelf health inspection and Rate of Sale Analysis
