Role Description:

Position Overview:
The Production Draftsman is responsible for creating detailed manufacturing drawings, managing CNC programming, initiating engineering changes, applying drawing standards and practices, ensuring drawing accuracy, ensuring manufacturability, and indicating critical dimensions for quality control (QC) purposes. This role plays a crucial part in the production process by providing accurate and clear instructions for manufacturing operations.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

  1. Drafting and Detailing: Create detailed manufacturing drawings based on engineering specifications, sketches, or verbal instructions. Apply knowledge of manufacturing processes, materials, and design principles to produce accurate and clear drawings.

  2. CNC Programming: Develop CNC (Computer Numerical Control) programs for machining operations using CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) software. Collaborate with CNC operators to optimize programs for efficient and accurate production.

  3. Engineering Change Management: Initiate and implement engineering changes to drawings as directed by the engineering team. Ensure all relevant parties are informed and updated on the changes, and revise drawings accordingly.

  4. Drawing Manual and Practice: Apply company-specific drawing standards, practices, and guidelines while creating and revising drawings. Stay updated with industry best practices and technological advancements related to drafting and manufacturing.

  5. Drawing Accuracy: Perform thorough reviews of drawings to ensure accuracy, completeness, and adherence to specifications. Verify dimensions, tolerances, and other critical details to minimize errors and potential manufacturing issues.

  6. Manufacturability Assurance: Collaborate with engineers, designers, and manufacturing personnel to ensure drawings are optimized for efficient and cost-effective production. Address manufacturability concerns and provide recommendations for design improvements.

  7. Critical Dimension Indication: Identify and highlight critical dimensions, tolerances, and geometric controls on drawings to facilitate quality control inspections. Clearly communicate requirements to the QC team to ensure compliance with specified standards.

  8. Documentation and Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of drawings, revisions, engineering changes, and associated records. Organize and archive drawings to facilitate easy retrieval and reference.

 

 

 

 

Skills requirements

  • Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD) software and relevant drafting tools (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks).

  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and materials.

  • Knowledge of CNC programming and CAM software.

  • Familiarity with engineering change management processes.

  • Attention to detail and a high level of accuracy in drawing creation and review.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to address manufacturability issues.

  • Excellent communication skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams.

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities effectively.

  • Familiarity with quality control and inspection processes.

  • Previous experience in a similar role or relevant education in drafting or engineering is preferred.
